Synopsis of Presentation

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition initiated by dental plaque. The associated tissue destruction is nearly always attributable to an uncontrolled host inflammatory response. To date periodontal therapy has focused on control of the microbial infection. However, new adjunctive treatment strategies are emerging which target the inflammatory responses. Host modulation therapy is a targeted treatment approach aimed at restoring the balance between health and disease by redirecting the treatment outcome towards a healing response or resolution of the destructive inflammatory reaction. This presentation will consider the development of such therapies and consider their relevance to contemporary periodontal practice.
