Prof. Lang's Farewell Lecture
Dentistry without and with implants- how predictable is our therapy
A generation ago, dental implants became available in their third generation following the principle of osseointegration. These devices have partially revolutionized clinical dentistry, but also brought about new aspects of complications both in terms of biological, technical and aesthetic aspects.
While traditional reconstructive dentistry provided predictable and satisfactory long-term outcomes with known complication rates, implant dentistry today is affected by a series of unknown factors leading to complications and unsatisfactory outcomes. Especially the maintenance of implant patients deserves utmost attention. The early diagnosis of biological complications should be given high priority and intercept with appropriate prophylactic and therapeutic measures should be routinely performed.
Predictable treatment outcomes can only be assured if biological factors receive higher priority over mechanical thinking and concepts.

Interdisciplinary treatment approach requires a highly interactive team, in which good communication and coordination are required both in treatment planning stage and throughout the course of treatment. Colleagues in the team should possess state of the art cross-disciplinary knowledge and have clear agreement about the distribution of responsibilities and shared knowledge of the patient's expectation.
In this study group, Dr She is going to present a series of treated and on-going cases which are co-managed with Dr. Tong, other periodontists and general dentists. A discussion will be modulated by Dr She and Dr Tong on a number of issues regarding periodontal-orthodontic interface.
The goals of this study group are to promote collaboration between orthodontists, periodontists and general dentists and to increase awareness to our profession towards the possibility of interdisciplinary management of young and adult patients with periodontally-involved dentition.
