Dental Lasers and Their Uses in Clinical Periodontology
Lecture 1: Basics of the advanced- Laser dentistry
Dr. Seto Siu Keung
Private Practitioner
BDS (HK), DGDP (UK), PDipDS (HK), MSc (Lond), Diploma in Clinical Acupuncture (HKU SPACE), MSc RWTH Aachen University Germany, MGD (CDSHK), European Master Degree in Oral Laser Application, Part-time Clinical Lecturer, Faculty of Dentistry, HKU, Scientific Co-worker, AALZ, RWTH Aachen University Germany, Expert Clinical Lecturer, Laser and Health Academy, Vice President, LOC WFLD 2008 HK Congress
Technology advances everyday. This presentation, serves as the appetizer for the subsequent speakers, will stress on the basic principles and importance of the laser physics in this advance technology and how will they affect the outcome of clinical applications. The importance of safety measures in using lasers will also be addressed.
Lecture 2: Laser in biomodulation – theory to practice in periodontology
Dr. Lai Man Lung, Stanley
Clinical Assistant Professor
Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry,
The University of Hong Kong
Different dental lasers are being used in dentistry nowadays. Laser applications by clinicians mainly confined to cutting or to ablating tissues. Examples being Erbium:YAG, Erbium:Cr:YSGG, Nd:YAG, diode or CO2 laser machines. A less known type of laser application called “Low level laser” generally involved smaller and less expensive machine which operate in milliwatt range. The therapeutic effects given by this type of laser, or what is called either the “Low level laser therapy (LLLT)” or “therapeutic laser”, is in fact well substantiated by science and is used in diverse clinical applications. This lecture will discuss about LLLT and highlight the science and research supporting the application of this type of laser in periodontology. Furthermore, possible applications of LLLT treatment modality in periodontal and implant therapy will also be covered.
Lecture 3: The Uses of Laser in the Management of Periodontal Diseases
Dr. Fung Kin Yue, Clive
Specialist in Periodontology
BDS(HK), MDS(HK), FCDSHK(Periodontology),
FHKAM(Dental Surgery), FAMS(Periodontology)
This presentation will review the current and potential applications of laser technology in the treatment of periodontal diseases. As laser systems applying the ablation effect of light energy, which is completely different from conventional mechanical debridement, may emerge as a new technical modality for non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy and based on its various characteristics, such as ablation or vaporization, hemostasis, and sterilization effect, laser treatment may serve as an adjunct or alternative to conventional, mechanical periodontal therapy.
Welcoming Lectures to New Graduates
Again this year, we have organized a welcoming gathering with our fellow new dental graduates right on the day they were notified with their successful examination results. Two lectures were presented by our council members Dr. Kelvin Wan and Dr. Kenny Tong on topics that might be useful for their future career. A number of them also joined our Society on that day and started their commitment of life-long learning as it is becoming an essential part of any modern profession.
